About two week's in to my stay, my study abroad program's first out of five day-long excursions came along.  Because this first excursion would take us to Madrid, Spain's vibrant capital with world-class art museums, stunning culture and a pulsating nightlife, every student was very eager to set off. Many of them had even booked rooms in Madrid's hostels in order to spend a long weekend there.
Unfortunately, however, a day or two before this exciting excursion rolled around I unexpectedly came down with a horrible stomach flu and due to it, I wasn't able to make the trip.  Since I didn't get a chance to go, I have applied and have been accepted to participate in an internship in Madrid this summer.
Even though I didn't get a chance to experience the excitement of Madrid during my study abroad, since I will be headed to Madrid this summer, I have done plenty of research on the city and with that, I have compiled this new post!
Starting off with Madrid's world-renowned art, this Spanish capital city is home to two incredibly famous art museums, El Museo del Prado y La Reina Sofía.  Here are two photos of them.  The first one is a photo of El Museo del Prado and the second one is a photo of La Reina Sofía.

Both of these museums house hundreds upon hundreds of priceless works of art.  Perhaps the most famous painting, which currently resides in La Reina Sofía, is Pablo Picasso's "Guernica."  In this painting, Picasso represented the atrocities that the Spanish city of Guernica suffered during the horrific Spanish Civil War.  Here's a photo of Picasso's captivating painting.

In addition to La Reina Sofía's "Guernica," the art museum El Museo del Prado is also home to numerous famous works painted by Spanish artists Goya and Velázquez.
Switching gears a bit, let's now explore Madrid's nature with its fabulous park El Parque del Retiro, or The Park of Retirement.  In this relaxing park you'll find lovely sculpture, numerous grassy areas and paths, as well as a small lake where you can ride paddle boats.  Take a look!

In addition to this enchanting park, Madrid also offers very impressive architecture.  Here's a photo of  Madrid's city hall as well as a photo of El Palacio Real de Madrid, or Madrid's royal palace.  The first photo is a photo of the city hall and the second is a photo of the palace.

Although Spain does indeed have a king, King Juan Carlos I, he does not currently live here. Instead, he lives in a palace on the outskirts of Madrid.  Because of this, El Palacio Real is currently only used for state ceremonies.
Finally, like the entire country of Spain, Madrid boasts an incredibly energetic nightlife.  Many of its nightclubs don't open until midnight and don't close until 6 or 7 am, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.  Kapital, a seven-story nightclub, is with out a doubt one of Madrid's most famous nightclubs.  Here are some photos of it! The perfect recipe for an exciting Friday or Saturday night in the fabulous city of Madrid!

Well this is all for now, I hope you have enjoyed my fifth blog post!  In my next post I will explore the exciting world of Spanish fútbol, soccer for us Americans, having a special focus on Madrid's fútbol team Real Madrid.

Here's where I found the photos of El Museo del Prado, La Reina Sofía, the painting of the Guernica, El Parque de Retiro, Madrid's city hall, El Palacio Real de Madrid, as well as the nightclub Kapital.
